Ervilhas com Ovos - Portuguese Pea Stew

Growing up I remember enjoying this meal many many many times. It's one of those that unless you're portuguese, you may find a little weird but I promise, once you try it it will become one of the comfort foods in your home.

It's great especially around the fall and winter seasons.

So here we go, this one takes me back to my childhood.

Ervilhas com Ovos - Portuguese Pea Stew

1 (16 oz) bag of frozen peas
Half a pound of bacon, cut into cubes
1 medium onion, diced
2 medium tomatoes, diced
1 bay leaf
olive oil
salt and pepper
garlic powder
1 small can of tomato sauce
Eggs (one per person)

In a pot, add a little bit of olive oil, add the onions, bacon, tomatoes and bay leaf, cook until onion is tender and bacon is cooked.

Add the peas and the tomato sauce, salt and pepper to taste and garlic powder. Stir until well combined. Add a little bit of water if needed to make sure you have a good amount of gravy.

Simmer for 15 minutes or until peas are tender.

When peas are cooked, take the wooden spoon, make a hole in the peas and open an egg into that whole. Do the same for the rest of the eggs. Do not stir at this point, you want the eggs to poach not break apart.

Once the eggs are cooked to your liking, turn the heat off and serve.

It's so easy and so simple to make and I think your family will be surprised at how good it is.

  2. Glad to see you back. Hope your husband is feeling better and your family is well. I never thought cream horns would be so easy that even I could make them. The pea stew looks different but as my oldest daughter would say--"tasteable"--don't really know how to spell that one!!! I would definitely try it since all the recipes I have tried from your blog are wonderful. Thanks for posting again. Sheila in NC

  3. Amazing! I googled dishes, found your simple life dish washing post...became interested in your writing. Went to the October section and stumbled upon the image of the Pea Stew, my mouth watered and it seemed so familiar. Then I click on the recipe, and BAM! Portuguese Pea Stew! I am Portuguese and I grew up on the Islands of Flores until I was nearly 10. I cannot cook any authentic food and have no one to teach me.

Its been 17 years since I lived in Portugal, and I still remember the flavors, the Lapas, the Ocean, the salted fish...the Holy Soup...thanks for giving me some recipes. Much LOVE!
