Homemade Vanilla Flavored Coffee Syrup

Flavored coffee syrup......great for your coffee.....not so great for your pocket.

My husband and I enjoy flavored syrups, but I don't buy them very often because I find them expensive.

Since I make a lot of store bought products at home, I figured that flavored syrup couldn't be that hard either, so I went in search of a recipe online.

I found a few, but decided to give Paula Deen's recipe a try.  Really easy to make and I love the dark color of the syrup.  Tried it in a cup of coffee this afternoon, and loved it.

I didn't follow her recipe exactly, I adapted it to my needs, which included cutting it in half and it still made quite a bit, enough to fill an empty Torani syrup bottle and a small little mason jar.

Now I know I can make it at home and not worry about spending so much money at the grocery store.

1 and 1/2 cups water
1 and 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 and 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract

In a medium saucepan over medium high heat, gently stir together the water and sugars. Cook until mixture becomes thick and syrupy (approximately 10-15 minutes). Allow to cool and stir in vanilla extract. Fill jar with cooled mixture.

Serve with your favorite coffee drink!

  1. ohhh, I actually thought this was a recipe for "Coffee Syrup" ~ I live in Rhode Island and we love our Coffee Syrup, (used to make coffee flavored sweetened milk, like making chocolate milk, strawberry milk etc), this recipe looks good too, and easy! I enjoy flavored coffee once in a while but usually never put sugar in my coffee ~ just cream :)
    Have a wonderful day!

  6. I followed your recipe. Thank you, but it seems that the sugar has crystallized at the bottom… how can this be fixed or avoided?

    1. Hi Vivi, I am so sorry your sugar crystallized, I'm not sure why that happened to yours. To fix it, I would pour it back into a small saucepan and reheat it on the stove making sure that all the sugar completely dissolves. Sometimes, if you don't dissolve all the sugar, it can cause crystallization.

Also, while heating the syrup, don't stir it, of times the stirring can cause a reaction that produces the crystallization. I may need to update my recipe to mention that, as I don't think I was clear enough not to stir while it cooks for the 10 to 15 minutes. Let it cool completely then pour into a clean jar. That should do the trick :)

Hope that helps. Again I'm so sorry it didn't turn out exactly right for you. But the good thing is that syrup is easily fixed.
